Interactive Museum: Conceptual Interior

THE HERITAGE CENTRE

Currently still a work in progress, the Heritage Centre is my final year project.

The brief instructed students to select a building of their choice from a list of specific typologies. Emphasis was placed on buildings that are in need of retrofit, and our task was to to propose a new function and design an effective adaptive reuse strategy to breathe life back into the building.

The building I chose was an old mill building located in Killorglin, Co. Kerry. Given the Mill's and the town's rich and somewhat hidden history, the proposed function is that of a heritage centre.

By mapping out locations of historical significance throughout the town of Killorglin, the concept of this project developed from connecting these locations and creating angular and geometric forms, representative of change over time.

THE ACCOUNTANT'S OFFICE

The 3rd year Accountant's Office Project is an adaptive reuse project at the Cork Bottling Plant in Cork City. The concept of this design was inspired by the previous function and decorative shot glasses and whiskey glasses. By shining a light against the cut crystal glasses, a unique combination of circular and angular shapes were created.

These shapes were then developed into a complex architectural language that was used for the design of collaborative open plan and private secluded spaces in the accountants office.

THE RETAIL PROJECT

Within the 2nd year Retail Project, I was given the opportunity to design a luxury tableware flagship store. The idea for this project was to create a smooth and sculptural form through the building that was reminiscent of the sculptural craft that would be sold there.

In addition to the tableware sales floor, the building also offered a cocktail bar, where the store could showcase and promote their glassware collections while working in collaboration with various beverage providers.

THE ARTS AND CULTURE CENTRE

This 2nd year project involved the conceptual development and design of an arts and culture centre. The building used for this project was located on St Patrick's Street in Cork City and the particular focus of this arts centre became film. This was inspired by Cork's longstanding culture in film, including  the annual Cork Film Festival.

The architectural design of the Centre is made to mimic film reels, with cuts made along walls to represent the moving nature of film scenes. The building also offers an open plan layout, allowing a certain 'translucent' quality to the building which further represents the translucent quality of film reels.
